Description from the seller
Camille Rousseau (1949) – The Elegant Ones at the Beach – Sainte-Cécile-Plage
Atmospheric and particularly decorative seaside scene by the French painter Camille Rousseau (1949), executed in oil on wooden panel.
The painting shows a lively scene on the beach of Sainte-Cécile-Plage, a smaller seaside resort on the Opal Coast. On the wide sandy beach, a group of elegantly dressed beachgoers has gathered. Ladies in light dresses and hats sit on beach chairs or seek shade under parasols, while other figures stroll along the shore. A few sailing boats on the horizon reinforce the maritime character of the scene.
Rousseau combines the fresh blue of sea and sky with warm ocher and sand tones. Accents in white, red, yellow and dark blue bring the figures to life. The small, abandoned parasol in the foreground adds a playful detail and gives the composition extra depth.
The painting technique is loose and impressionistic, with clearly visible brushstrokes and locally paste-like paint applied. Figures, clothing and parasols are depicted with quick, decisive strokes. It is precisely this spontaneous way of painting that gives the small work its lively and sunny aura.
The work is signed lower left with "Rousseau" and is presented in a richly decorated gold-colored frame, fitting the classical French character of the scene.
