Description from the seller
Magnificent and important patinated bronze sculpture from the Napoleonic III era (circa 1870-1880), depicting a young woman draped in antique style, seated pensively on a chaise longue and absorbed in her reading.
This successful model, often associated with the creations of Mathurin Moreau or James Pradier, is distinguished by the omnipresence of the attributes of the lyre arts: the figure holds a book engraved with musical staves and a classical lyre rests against the seat’s pedestal.
Characteristics and technical details:
• Era: 19th century (Napoleon III period, circa 1875).
• Material: Genuine bronze with original brown patina (traditional casting using sand casting).
• Foundry marks: Presence of the assembly technical mark “ST” cold-stamped inside the pedestal, as well as period workshop marks, guaranteeing the piece’s authenticity.
• Quality of execution: Very fine chasing, particularly visible in the drapery of the dress, the Neo-Grec bed motifs, and the straps of the sandals.
• Condition: Good overall condition with its original patina. Some old traces of cleaning product in the recesses (which emphasize the details) that attest to its authenticity. Piece sold separately (historically this was a sumptuous summit subject crowning a large mantel clock).
Ideal dimensions for furniture or a fireplace:
• Length: 30 cm
• Height: 25 cm
• Weight: Substantial (solid bronze)
