Description from the seller
Rare Algerian Tabzimt Fibula with Mediterranean Coral – Early 20th Century
A stunning and authentic traditional Berber fibula (Tabzimt / Adwir) from the Kabylia region (North Algeria), dating from the early 20th century (or late 19th century). This type of jewelry is a masterful example of the renowned goldsmithing of the Amazigh (Berber) artisans, particularly known from the villages of Beni Yenni.
Special base (French 5 Franc coin):
Entirely in keeping with colonial-period tradition, this round brooch is built around a silver French 5-franc coin. Silversmiths used these coins for their high silver content (.900 silver) and sturdy structure as a perfect foundation for their handiwork.
Craftsmanship and details:
• Material: High-purity silver, richly adorned with fine filigree and granulation work.
• Enamel: Decorated with the characteristic Kabyle colors: vibrant yellow, deep blue, and green.
• Gemstones: Inlaid with beautiful, hand-cut cabochons of natural Mediterranean coral, including a striking large piece of coral at the heart of the brooch.
• Charms: Nine traditional, geometric pendeloques (hangers) hang around the central fibula, each also finished with enamel and coral accents, creating a beautiful dynamic and movement.
Function and Symbolism:
The Tabzimt was worn by Berber women on the chest or as a headdress during ceremonial occasions such as weddings. It served not only as jewelry and a clothing pin but was also an important symbol of status, female pride, and cultural identity.
Condition of the object:
The brooch is in a beautiful, original antique state with a very attractive, characterful patina. All enamel and coral stones are present. The closure (ring and pin) at the back functions properly.
An absolute top piece for the collector of ethnographic and tribal art, antique silver jewelry, or North African history.
Specifications:
• Origin: Algeria (Great Kabylia)
• Period: Early 20th century (circa 1900-1930)
• Weight: 85.2 grams
• Height: 10.5 cm long (including hangers)
