Description
A magnificently illustrated original volume from Giulio Ferrario’s substantial encyclopedic work Il Costume Antico e Moderno, one of the most extensive and elaborate cultural-historical publications of the early 19th century.
Ferrario’s monumental work documents the history, religion, clothing, social customs, architecture, and way of life of the peoples of various continents. The numerous detailed, hand-colored plates are particularly valued today by both collectors of travel literature and enthusiasts of early ethnographic depictions.
This fifth Asia volume from 1830 is devoted in particular to Persia, Afghanistan, Tibet, Georgia, the Caucasus, and the historic peoples of Central Asia.
The 13 charming, hand-colored plates depict, among others:
* Portraits of Persian kings in magnificent robes and headgear
* Persian soldiers and traditional wedding ceremonies
* The ancient ruins of Persepolis and the Naqsh-e Rostam cliff tomb
* A Persian king’s palace and historic Persian costumes
* Population groups from Afghanistan and Central Asia
* Traditional clothing of the Tibetans
* Georgian costumes
* Armament and dress of Caucasian princes as well as the Circassians
* Historic costumes from Bukhara, Uzbekistan and other Central Asian regions
Particularly attractive are the vivid colors of the historical costume depictions and the finely executed architectural views.
The copy is completely illustrated: all 13 plates listed in the plate index, numbered 66 to 78, are present. None are missing.
Condition
Overall good used condition for a book nearly 200 years old.
Contemporary half-leather binding with gold-impressed title on the spine and decorative gilding on the back. The marbled cover boards show more pronounced age-related and wear-induced creasing, especially at the edges and corners.
The text block shows age-typical paper yellowing and occasional stains. On one text pages there is a small paper damage.
The hand-colored plates are generally well preserved and mainly display beautiful, vivid colors.
A decorative, fully illustrated example of this historic edition with special collector value for those interested in Persia, the Caucasus, Tibet, and Central Asia.
Note
This is an original antiquarian book from 1830 with corresponding age and wear. The photographs are part of the condition description and show the exact copy offered. Please examine them carefully before placing a bid.
