Original Japanese oil-lamp stand converted to an electric lamp, Hanshaban-tsuki tôdai, in black metal with copper-coloured mounts, 82.5 cm high and 24.5 cm wide, Mid‑Shôwa period, with a white circular reflector featuring three women and a central rotatable electric lamp; it retains Japanese fittings and requires adaptation for European use, with one plug cover plate missing, and is in good condition.
Description from the seller
An attractive electric lamp based on a traditional Japanese oil-lamp stand with reflector, hanshaban-tsuki tôdai 反射板付灯台, after a model in the Suntory Museum of Art.
Also known as nemuri tankei 睡短檠, because of the sleeping figure.
In the original oil-lamp form, the reflector attached behind the lamp also functioned as a windbreak to prevent the wick’s flame from being extinguished.
Made of black metal with copper-coloured metal mounts. The white circular reflector is painted with a charming scene of three women, one sleeping at a table, another practising calligraphy, and a third unrolling and reading a handscroll.
Mounted in the centre with a gold-coloured metal fitting and a white half-cylindrical electric lamp. This central lamp section can be rotated.
Please note that the lamp still has Japanese electrical fittings, including the bulb and plug, which need to be adapted or replaced for use with a European electrical system.
Period: Japan – Mid-20th century (Mid-Shôwa period)
Dimensions: Height 82.5 cm, Diameter 24.5 cm.
Considering its age, the lamp is in good condition with some superficial scratches and traces of wear consistent with age. A cover plate from the plug is missing. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
