Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present at auction a discovery of a historical and bibliographical rarity in folio format: the First Edition (Edición Princeps) of 1584 of the monumental work "Ioannis Philippi Iurisconsulti Monspeliensis, et in Curia Subsidianorum Præsidis, Iuris Responsa".
There is currently no other copy for sale on the international antiquarian book market. This compilation of decrees by the renowned French jurist and magistrate Jean Philippe (Ioannes Philippus), printed in the famous city of Lyon in 1584 under the coveted privilege of the King of France (Cum Privilegio Regis), constitutes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for top-tier institutions and high bibliophile collectors.
A masterpiece of law and Renaissance European legal thought, coveted for its extreme scarcity as well as its magnificent typography and Renaissance ornamental printing from the Lyonnais press of the 16th century.
ORNAMENTAL PROGRAM AND RENAISSANCE ENGRAVINGS:
+ Architectural Frontispiece with Royal Vignette: Beautiful typographic cover crowned by a large central woodcut vignette that depicts an oval shield adorned with royal crowns, Mannerist scrollwork, grotesque creatures, and rich period floral decoration.
+ Historiated Initials with Vegetal Ornament: Magnificent large-format woodcut initials at the start of chapters and prefaces (such as the famous historiated letter with grotesque motifs or the classic decorated initial "A" with lattices and foliage).
+ Cul-de-lamps and Typographic Infographics: Headers and tailpieces engraved with cherubs, grotesque heads, and Renaissance ornamental friezes of exquisite design.
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF THE WORK: DARK CASE LAW, CRIMINAL LAW AND CIVIL LAW:
+ Preliminary Apparatus: Includes extensive prefaces (Præfatio), poetic dedications honoring the author from wise contemporaries and magistrates, the detailed Index of subjects, and the official extract of the royal printing privilege granted in Paris in 1579.
+ Homicides by Chance and Punishment of Blood (Homicidium fortuitum seu casuale): Decrees and legal analyses on violent deaths and accidental deaths, detailing under what conditions the loss of a human life should be avenged, punished, or absolved (de re inhibi multa, quomodo et quando vindicandum).
+ Marital Frauds and Turbid Inheritances: Resolutions on dark matrimonial arrangements, disputes over multimillion-dollar dowries, and the revocation of donations made by dying persons before their death, analyzing motivations of greed, coercion, and manipulation of hereditary assets.
+ Financial Crimes and Plunder of Debtors: Decrees on severe embargoes, unpaid debts, usury and the patrimonial consequences for the families of criminals and defendants condemned by the royal justice (reus capitalis).
+ Legal Anatomy of the 16th Century: Compilation of practical doctrine written by Jean Philippe, president of the Montpellier court of subsidies, revealing the stark, contentious, and dramatic face of Renaissance French society.
Including many other cases and aspects through a systematic compilation of legal decrees, practical cases, and resolutions of civil and customary law of great significance for the practice of law of the era.
