Material and technique:
Oil paint on canvas, stretched on a wooden stretcher. The flowers and leaves are painted with visible brushstrokes, with locally thicker applications of paint for the light accents.
Framing:
Framed. The painting is set in a broad, gold-colored decorative frame with leaf motifs, scroll ornaments and a warm-brown inner edge.
Discussion and analysis of the work:
A decorative floral composition in a tall, vertical format. Large, open roses in soft pink, salmon pink and cream-white are alternated with smaller, deep pink flowers, buds and green leaves. The curved branches guide the eyes across the painting and give the scene a natural movement.
The light-colored flowers stand out against a dark brown-green background, which at the top transitions to warmer ochre tones. Strong light accents on the petals and foliage create volume. The combination of finer branches and freely painted flowers gives the work a lively, painterly character.
The label on the reverse states “likely 19th century.”
