Description from the seller
Jean PERRIN (XXe) — Triptych of Animated Scenes in the Maghreb — Set of 3 Gouaches, Chinese Ink, and Pastels
Remarkable homogeneous series composed of three original gouaches enhanced with Chinese ink, charcoal (or black stone), and pastel on paper, executed by the famous Orientalist painter and illustrator Jean Perrin. This ensemble, of perfect stylistic coherence, offers a graphic and lively immersion into the daily life of traditional quarters of Morocco and colonial Algeria.
• The first gouache (Steep alley with the porter and the donkey) depicts a particularly picturesque stepped alley, topped with wooden structures and suspended footbridges connecting the dwellings. A craftsman wearing a red fez leads a heavily loaded donkey, progressing on pavements illuminated with touches of azure blue and white pastel.
• The second gouache (The passage under the fortified gate) features a monumental stone arch marking the entrance to the medina. A female figure draped in a white and blue haik advances toward the viewer, while the artist brilliantly suggests the animation and architecture of the shaded street in the background.
• The third gouache (Scene on the square with the minaret) captures a moment on a sunlit public square. In the foreground, an old man rests on his cane beside local figures seated, near traditional architecture adorned with a green-glazed-tile canopy. The slim silhouette of a minaret stands out elegantly against the sky in the background.
Jean Perrin’s technique here stands out for its strong graphic maturity: ink and charcoal hatching structure the shadows and textures of the old stones, while bright white gouache highlights and delicate pastel shades (lavender, pink, ochre) perfectly capture the distinctive bright atmosphere of the Maghreb. Each work is signed by the artist's hand “Perrin” at the bottom right.
Biography and Historical Context:
Jean Perrin is a French painter and illustrator of the first half of the 20th century, whose career was deeply shaped by his stays in North Africa. Active during the colonial period (1920s–1940s), he earned a solid reputation thanks to his ethnographically faithful illustrations and genre scenes, respectfully bearing witness to daily life in Morocco and Algeria. Distancing himself from strict academicism, Perrin offers a modern, clear, and linear vision of the Orient, inherited from his talent as an illustrator. His compositions admirably play with zenithal light and the contrasts of vaulted passages, making his works highly decorative pieces and highly sought after by Orientalist art collectors of the 20th century.
