Born in Bordeaux on January 6, 1858, the French painter and draftsman Jean Ulysse-Roy (also spelled Ulysse Roy) first trained at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown before entering the prestigious Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Although numerous art-market sources mistakenly place his death in 1891—the year of creation of his famous work Le Petit ramoneur—the historical research proves that he died much later, on June 1, 1939 in Paris.
His multidisciplinary talent expressed itself through large academic compositions, softly brushed oil-on-canvas scenes of interiors or female nudes, but also original formats that fully aligned with the emerging Art Nouveau movement.
A versatile artist rooted in his era, he also led a rich career as a press illustrator during the 1890s, actively collaborating with illustrated periodicals in the capital such as L'Écho du Boulevard or La Libre Parole illustrée.
