Lazare du Crot, author of Le Vray Styl General, presents a five-treatise collection in a 1623–1628 French leather-bound edition, 18 × 12 cm, about 1468 pages, in good condition.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present at auction an extraordinary collectible piece for jurists and historians of the law of the Old Regime, 10 cm thick: the monumental compendium "Le Vray Styl General" (The True General Forensic Practice), drafted by the court jurist and lawyer in the Parliament Lazare du Crot (under the initials L. D. C.).
Published in Paris in 1628 by the prestigious printer Estienne Richer (ruë S. Jean de Latran, à l'Arbre Verdoyant) and complemented with the tracts printed by Jean Richer in 1623, this volume brings together the definitive manual of procedure for the supreme tribunals and courts of justice of the kingdom of France under the reign of Louis XIII.
WHAT TREATISES DOES THIS VOLUME CONTAIN:
This magnificent binding body gathers in a single volume five procedural and independent treatises, each endowed with its own typographic title page and printed with the royal privilege:
+ Le Vray Styl General du Conseil Privé du Roy... (1628): Procedural code of the King’s Privy Council, the kingdom’s highest appellate authority.
+ Le Vray Styl de la Cour de Parlement (1623): Procedure manual before the Grand Parliament of Paris.
+ Le Vray Styl de la Cour des Aydes (1623): Code of the tax and revenue court of the Old Regime.
+ Le Stile des Requestes du Palais (1623): Forensic practice before the court’s Petition Chamber.
+ Le Vray Styl du Chastelet de Paris (1623): Manual of the famous civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Châtelet of Paris, seat of major criminal cases, blood trials and executions.
FORENSIC INTENSITY: CRIMINAL PROCEDURES, EXECUTIONS AND COURT PRIVILEGES
An invaluable historical testimony for understanding the internal functioning of the French judicial institutions of the Baroque:
+ The Châtelet of Paris Penal Court: The operational guide for the sustenance of criminal proceedings, arrests, interrogations and the initiation of cases of high danger in the French capital.
+ Royal Evocation and Supreme Jurisdiction: The analysis of the Monarchy’s power to evoke judicial causes from any tribunal to judge them directly in its Privy Council (Conseil Privé).
+ Beneficial Law and Judicial Privileges: Includes a summarized compendium of exemptions, immunities and jurisdictions of royal court officials and ecclesiastical causes.
ORNAMENTAL PROGRAM AND EDITORIAL FEATURES:
+ Famous Xylographic Printing Mark (L'Arbre Verdoyant): Beautiful oval engraving on the inner covers representing the allegory of the Verdant Tree (à l'Arbre Verdoyant) with the figure of a scholar and the motto printed on filigree.
+ Baroque Friezes and Motifs: Elegant frontispiece wood engravings with birds, vegetal motifs, acanthus and historiated initial capitals.
+ Official apparatus with Royal Privilege: Preserves the Extractum du Privilege du Roy granted in Paris in November 1622 signed by Bergeron.
