Porcelain alms-bowl censer from China in a 20th century dynastic style, titled Blue-and-White 'Journey to the West' Alms-Bowl Censer, in good condition with a height of about 12 cm and a rim diameter of about 20 cm.
Description from the seller
Description
A substantial, elegantly proportioned vessel in the form of a traditional alms-bowl censer — wide, neatly finished rim, smoothly rounded swelling body tapering gently to a sturdy, neatly trimmed foot ring. The exterior is masterfully painted in rich, layered underglaze blue with a continuous narrative scene from Journey to the West, rendered with exceptional detail and expressive brushwork. The composition unfolds around the vessel: Tang Monk in flowing robes holding his ceremonial staff, the Monkey King subduing a rearing horse-drawn carriage, and Sandy assisting alongside — all set within a misty landscape of willows, rocky crags, rolling waters and distant hills. Shades of blue are skilfully varied to create depth and atmosphere, making this a vivid, exceptionally well-executed storytelling piece.
Dimensions:
Height: approx. 12 cm
Rim diameter: approx. 20 cm
Condition
Gentle, even surface wear consistent with age and careful use; minor natural discoloration to the rim and foot ring;
No chips, cracks, hairlines, restoration or significant glaze loss observed;
Blue pigment remains deep, clear and vibrantly preserved; all figures and landscape details sharp and distinct;
Overall in excellent, intact and impressively preserved condition.
