Description from the seller
"Campesino and Son" (Veracruz, Mexico, 1927)
is one of the most celebrated photographs by Italian-born photographer and political activist Tina Modotti.
The photograph captures a peasant farmer (campesino) and his young son. Modotti tightly crops the frame, often focusing heavily on the textures of their clothing, their sombreros, and their weathered, expressive features.
• Modernist Influence: Trained under her lover and collaborator Edward Weston, Modotti utilized "straight photography"—characterized by sharp focus, high contrast, and geometric simplicity. Instead of capturing a soft, romanticized pictorial view of poverty, she uses bold lines and stark shadows to give the subjects a monumental, statuesque dignity.
2. Historical and Political Context
• Post-Revolutionary Mexico: Shot in 1927, the photograph was taken during the height of Mexico's Agrarian Reform following the Mexican Revolution. Campesinos across the country were fighting for fair land redistribution. Modotti used her camera as a tool to advance their cause and document their struggles.
Gelatin silver print on baryta paper, 30x24 cm, Galerie Bilderwelt, portfolio edition of 5.
Similar print used in the exhibition, catalog & portfolio "TINA MODOTTI -Photographien & Dokumente" Berlin 1989, the first exhibition of Modottis work in Germany.
It was organized in cooperation with Fototeca del Inah, Pachuca, Mexico, the repository of the surviving Modotti negatives transferred from Trieste to Mexico in the 1970s by Carlos Vidali, son of Vittorio Vidali, the last companion of Tina Modotti.
