Description from the seller

Georges Cuvier. The Animal Kingdom, arranged according to its organization. As a foundation of the natural history of animals and an introduction to comparative anatomy. Leipzig, F.A. Brockhaus, 1831-1843, xlviii-975 pp., xvi-539 pp., xviii-621 pp., xiv-516 pp., xxvii-686 pp., xvi-579 pp.

6 volumes in octavo (220x140 mm), cloth-covered boards, smooth spine, leather title piece (bindings later). Very good condition of the bindings. Interior fresh, rare foxing. Ex-libris of Philippe Taquet, French paleontologist, glued on each flyleaf.

German edition, translated and enlarged by the German botanist Friedrich Siegmund Voigt; complete in 6 volumes

Volume I (1831) is devoted to mammals and birds; Volume II (1832) to reptiles and fishes; Volume III (1834) to mollusks; and Volume IV (1836) to annelids, crustaceans, arachnids, and apterous insects. The last two volumes, published in 1839 and 1843, complete the set with insects proper, then zoophytes. This organization recalls Cuvier’s zoological classification based on the anatomical organization of animals and intended to serve as a basis for natural history and as an introduction to comparative anatomy.
