Raymond Renéfer, born Jean-Constant-Raymond Fontanet in 1879 and died in 1957, is a French painter, engraver and illustrator deeply marked by his experience as a soldier during the First World War. Mobilized in 1914, he produced numerous sketches and etchings on the front that bear witness with striking realism and without heroism to the daily life of the soldiers in the trenches. After the conflict, he put his artistic talent to work in publishing by illustrating masterpieces of literature, notably works by Victor Hugo, Émile Zola and Maurice Genevoix. As a painter, he stands out for his landscapes of the Paris suburbs, his views of the Seine and his urban scenes with often melancholic atmospheres. Attached to transmission, he founded in 1928 the Association for Art and Education, aiming to introduce children to drawing and artistic creation. A passionate traveler, his stays in Brittany, Normandy and the Vendée inspire luminous marine works with bold framings. His graphic and pictorial work remains a precious historical and artistic testament to the first half of the 20th century in France. Today, his productions are preserved in several major museum institutions, such as the Musée de la Grande Guerre du pays de Meaux, which honors his role as a painter-witness of the front.
