AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Large Monumental Famille Rose Baluster Vase with Lid – Edme Samson & Cie (Paris) – ca. 1880–1900

An impressive, monumental porcelain lidded baluster vase with a total height of no less than 56 cm. Made in France by the renowned house Edme Samson & Cie (Paris), dating from the late 19th century (ca. 1880–1900).

The vase is executed in the classic 18th-century Chinese Qianlong Famille Rose export pattern and features an exuberantly hand-painted decor in overglaze enamel colors: Central scene: A traditional Chinese garden scene with blooming peonies, chrysanthemums, a weeping willow, and a distinctive perforated rock (Taihu rock / scholar's rock) in cobalt and enamel blue, framed by a garden railing/balustrade in iron-red. The flowers are subtly enriched with gold accents.

Shoulder & neck: Around the shoulder a broad, ruyi-shaped collar filled with fine-meshed floral scrollwork and tendrils. The neck is decorated with flower sprays and edged with a pink band.

Lid: The accompanying, hat-shaped lid repeats the floral motif and is crowned with a detailed, multicolored enamelled and gilded sculptural Foo dog (little lion).

Mark: On the underside, the hand-painted iron-red pseudo-Eastern atelier/factory mark of Samson.

Dimensions
Total height (with lid): ca. 56 cm
Diameter of body (max): ca. 25 cm
Foot diameter: ca. 16.5 cm

Condition report
Vase: The neck shows a fine vertical hairline crack that starts at a minuscule edge chip on the rim and runs down over the shoulder to the upper part of the body wall (see the clear detail photos). The vase is structurally solid; no large shards are missing and no prior restorations observed.

Lid: In very good condition; the molded Foo dog is intact with minimal aging wear on the gilding. The inset edge shows the usual light bakon irregularities and superficial discoloration of the unglazed rim.

Enamel: The painting and enamel are in unusually bright, fresh condition.

Shipping & Packaging
