Description from the seller
An interesting wooden charm figure representing a Korwar ancestor figure from Yapen Island in the Geelvink Bay (Cenderawasih Bay) region of West Papua, New Guinea. Korwar figures traditionally played an important role in the spiritual life of coastal Papuan communities, serving as representations of deceased ancestors and maintaining a symbolic connection between the living and the ancestral world. Such figures were associated with protection, guidance and communication with ancestral spirits. This particular example has a strong, expressive appearance, with an attractive old surface showing the effects of age and prolonged exposure to the tropical environment. The wood has developed a naturally weathered patina, with some surface erosion and irregularities that contribute to its authentic character. Despite these signs of weathering, the figure retains its distinctive form and visual appeal. An evocative ethnographic object from the rich ancestral traditions of the Geelvink Bay region, particularly interesting to collectors of traditional Papuan art.
