AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Quintus Horatius Flaccus – OPERA – Naples, Vincenzo Orsini, 1741 – Two volumes in antique parchment bindings – Latin edition with commentary by Ludovicus Desprez

Interesting eighteenth-century Neapolitan edition of the works of Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65–8 BC), one of the greatest poets of Latin literature, published in Naples in 1741 by Vincenzo Orsini (Apud Vincentium Ursinum).

The work is offered in two physical volumes, each with its own title page, respectively labeled Tomus Primus and Tomus Secundus.

The Latin text is accompanied by the interpretations and extensive annotations of Ludovicus Desprez, according to the tradition of classical editions in usum Delphini, conceived for study and the deepening of ancient literature.

The edition features rich typographic layout with poetic text, explanations (Interpretatio) and notes (Annotationes). Among the works are the Odes, Epodes, Satires, Epistles and the Art of Poetry, with an extensive apparatus of linguistic, historical and literary commentary. There are also indices and a final vocabulary.

Bindings: both volumes retain the hard parchment bindings, light in color, with the natural patina of time. The spines appear without modern labels.

Conditions: copies in fair condition for their age. The parchments show yellowing, stains, abrasions and signs of use; the edges and corners show wear. Inside, there are foxing, occasional stains and browning, while the printing remains generally legible. Refer to the numerous photographs for a detailed assessment of the conservation state.

A fascinating testimony to Neapolitan classical publishing of the eighteenth century, particularly suitable for antique-book collectors, scholars of Latin literature, and Horace enthusiasts.
