Portrait of a Young Man in a Gorget and Beret, a 19th‑century European School oil painting attributed to a follower of Rembrandt van Rijn, sold with a carved wood and gilt frame.
Description from the seller
19th-Century European School Portrait of a Young Man in a Gorget and Beret
After the celebrated "Tronie" types by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1642).
A fine oil on reinforced panel depicting a young man in profile. He is adorned in a black beret with a plumed feather, wearing an iron gorget (neck armor) over a purple doublet accented by a golden chain.
This portrait perfectly captures the essence of the Tronies (character studies) from the Dutch Golden Age—an aesthetic that experienced a massive resurgence and fascination among 19th-century collectors and artists. The work skillfully employs the dramatic chiaroscuro (light and shadow) characteristic of Rembrandt’s circle.
Oil on panel (reinforced), 48 × 37 cm (+ period compilmentary oval frame in carved wood and gilt stucco).
Fine overall condition for a work of this age. Features a natural, historic craquelure, minor structural cracks, and faint paint loss
This artwork serves as a highly elegant statement piece, ideal for enthusiasts of Old Master aesthetics and cabinet of curiosities decor.
