AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Jules Verne - P'tit-Bonhomme (Part One) - Hetzel binding "with initials JV-JH" - 1895/1898

Lot description

Rare single-volume copy of the novel P'tit-Bonhomme (First part only, 223 pages) by Jules Verne, published by J. Hetzel & Cie in its prestigious collection Voyages Extraordinaires.
This copy has the remarkable feature of being clad in the legendary publisher's full red percaline binding known as "with initials JV-JH." This motif with grapevine motifs, originally created for older titles, was reissued late and highly sought after for only 8 titles at the end of Verne's oeuvre. It is a print run estimated between 1895 and 1898, notable for the integration of its luxury illustrations.
The work includes the famous title page specifying the presence of the 12 large chromotypographic engravings hors-texte (the color plates of the first part are indeed present and vibrant) as well as numerous black-and-white engravings by Léon Benett.

Detailed condition report:

• Boards: Very good overall on the first board. The gilding with fine gold has remained particularly vivid, luminous, and well centered. The second board is clean, with its black rosette printed in relief.
• Binding & Structure: Note that the text block has slightly shifted and the book tilts a bit to the side (structural weakness at the inner hinges, common in these volumes).
• Spines & Corners: Worn condition. The upper and lower spines are collapsed and rubbed, with small splits/frays of the percaline. The four corners are worn with slight fabric losses.
• Page edges: Edges gilded with fine gold on all three sides and retain a nice shine.
Spine detached.
• Interior: Good used condition. Presence of foxing and browning natural to acidity of the paper of the period, not impairing reading. The magnificent color plates (chromotypographies) are very fresh. No publisher catalog at the end.

Technical characteristics:

• Format: Large in-8° (27.5 x 18.5 cm)
• Pagination: 223 pages (First part only)
• Publisher: Hetzel Collection / Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation
• Binding: Full red percaline, gilded edges.
An uncommon volume, ideal to complete a collection of Hetzel-specific bookbindings.
Fast shipping, neat packaging, and with tracking
