Antique hammered brass coal scuttle from the Netherlands, dating to 1900–1910, with a relief-decorated lid.
Description from the seller
This is an antique brass coal scuttle (coal bucket) from the early 20th century (around 1900). Made of hammered brass with a raised rim and a round foot. The lid is adorned with a relief or heraldic decoration (often featuring historical, heraldic, or artisan motifs). The depicted clothing and setting are 19th century (Old Dutch style).
For this specific type of antique copper coal scuttle there is no identifiable individual manufacturer or gold-/coppersmith to attribute it to. The designer placed a minute signature on the relief image.
Such copper fireplace accessories rarely bear factory stamps or brand names. However, the features and provenance of this type of object are historically very specific.
Typical of Dutch, Belgian (Flemish), and French decorative arts from the period 1880–1930.
Traditionally used beside the hearth to store coal or firewood, but nowadays also popular as a decorative object or planter.
Because it is not yet known who the buyer will be, I have not given it a copper polish (not everyone wants to polish it); I therefore leave that choice to the buyer.
