Description from the seller
Complete three-volume set in full binding from the Théâtre de Marie-Joseph de Chénier (1764-1811), published in Paris in 1818 by Foulon et Cie and Baudouin Frères.
Original posthumous collective edition, preceded by a biographical notice and adorned with a engraved portrait of the author.
This collection brings together the major theatrical works of Marie-Joseph de Chénier, French playwright, poet and politician, an important figure of the revolutionary period and the First Empire.
The three volumes include notably Charles IX, Henry VIII, Caius Gracchus, Tiberius, Oedipus-Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, as well as several plays of his posthumous theatre.
Uniform old leather bindings, with richly decorated spines bearing gold motifs, red title and volume labels, red filet and floral ornaments in gilt.
Condition:
The three volumes show beautiful, sturdy bindings, with rubbing and signs of wear related to their age. The gilding is still well preserved.
Inside, exceptionally fresh for works dating from 1818. Some foxing and light time stains on certain pages, without significant text alteration visible.
Engraved portrait of the author present.
Set of three volumes numbered 1 to 3, constituting the complete collection of this edition.
Total pagination: about 1,350 pages, including preliminary matter.
A fine French literary series from the early 19th century, valuable both for its literary and historical interest and for the decorative quality of its bindings.
