Bronze apothecary mortar dated 1861, with a dotted inscription.
Description from the seller
Antique bronze mortar dated 1861, with a dotted inscription
Beautiful apothecary mortar in solid bronze, cast in the mid-19th century and bearing the date “1861” as well as initials, all traced in dots on the body. This type of dotted marking, very graphic, is typical of pieces customized or commissioned for professional or family use. Notably the letters “J · B · J” appear, separated by dots, to be confirmed on the object.
The patina is superb: a warm brown with golden and copper highlights, and a clearly visible foundry grain over the entire surface. The underside, rough from the foundry, shows the irregularities and wear marks expected of a piece from that era.
Used in the past in pharmacy or in the kitchen to grind spices and preparations, this mortar will today find its place in a characterful kitchen, a fireplace, or a library. It can also serve as a cache-pot or a valet tray.
Material: cast bronze
Era: dated 1861, 19th century
Decoration: dotted inscription (date and initials)
