Title
124 cm – Monumental Saint Notburga of Rattenberg, Grödnertal/Val Gardena, South Tyrol, masterful sacred wood sculpture, limewood, polychrome finish, circa 1970
Description
Monumental Saint Notburga of Rattenberg – traditional sacred wood carving
Particularly representative large-scale piece with a pedestal
With a total height of approximately 124 cm, this Saint Notburga presents itself as a monumental sacred ensemble. The figure itself measures about 85 cm and is effectively complemented by a tall, intricately turned and profiled pedestal.
The pedestal gives the sculpture a particularly representative presence and distinctly sets this ensemble apart from smaller works and variants without a pedestal. Figure and pedestal form together an impressive presentation that is ideally suited for a discerning collection of sacred art or as a representative religious display piece.
The exceptional overall height, the massive limewood, the colored finish, and the elaborately designed pedestal make this ensemble a striking focal point.
Dating and origin
Dating: circa 1970.
The design is in the tradition of classical sacred wood carving from the Grödnertal (Val Gardena), South Tyrol, Italy.
Material and artistic execution
The figure is carved from solid limewood and provided with a traditional polychrome, hand-painted finish in oil painting. The colored decoration, the decorative gold detailing, and the finely worked garment parts give the saintly figure an impressive, traditional appearance.
