Mariette Lydis’s 1925 first edition of Orientalisches Traumbuch is a German illustrated book on dream interpretation, with 27 colour plates, some highlighted in gold, and a separately supplied rotating horoscope.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally decorated artists' book by the Vienna illustrator Mariette Lydis: The 1925 publication Orientalisches Traumbuch (Oriental Dream Book) combines vivid, gold-embossed miniatures with dream interpretation, astrology, and a separately included, rotating horoscope.
First edition. Mariette Lydis (1887–1970). Orientalisches Traumbuch. Potsdam, Müller & Co. Verlag, 1925. 167 pages with 27 colored, partly gold-embossed plates and decorative mid-title captions, throughout ornamentally framed text pages, as well as a separately bound, color-illustrated horoscope with a rotating disc in the dust jacket pocket. Illustrated original paper boards with oriental-inspired cover decoration and a gold-colored central field. 18 x 12 cm
--------------------------------------
The work unlocks the mysterious world of dreams through numerous alphabetically organized keywords and their folk interpretations. The topics range from everyday objects and human encounters to love, eroticism, illness, death, and supernatural appearances. The dream interpretation is complemented by astrological explanations of the twelve zodiac signs.
Particularly impressive is the artistic design. Mariette Lydis blends oriental ornamentation with an autonomous, partly expressive visual language. Her colored illustrations with gold embossing depict, among other things, angels, female figures, fantastical scenes, and allegorical representations. The elaborately designed frames, geometric patterns, and decorative title pages give the book the character of a bibliophile Gesamtkunstwerk.
Mariette Lydis, born in 1887 in Vienna, developed in the 1920s into an internationally sought-after illustrator. Later she became especially known for her sensual and erotic depictions as well as her illustrations of literary classics. The Oriental Dream Book belongs to her early, particularly decorative book publications and documents the fascination of European interwar-era art with oriental imagery.
--------------------------------------
Binding rubbed and soiled, cover slightly bent, upper edge a bit damaged. Otherwise very clean. Overall a decorative exemplar of this bibliophile first edition with remarkable artistic design.
