Lucerne Lucite Space Age men’s wristwatch with a 35 mm transparent acrylic case, chromed bezel and rubber strap, hand-wound Swiss movement by Basis Watch with one ruby jewel, black dial with Roman numerals at quarter hours, in very good condition with light wear, no original box, papers or warranty.
Description from the seller
This special vintage Lucerne pocket/handwatch is a beautiful and authentic example of the iconic Space Age and Pop Art design from the early 1970s. What immediately catches the eye about this model is the distinctive rounded square case and the accompanying watch bracelet, which are entirely made of transparent acrylic, back then also referred to as Lucite or plexiglass. Thanks to this transparent construction, the back serves as an early form of a viewing window, allowing the fascinating mechanical movement to be wonderfully visible while it ticks. The watch is equipped with a reliable and fully Swiss manual-wind movement from the well-known manufacturer Basis Watch, marked with one ruby as the jewel and bearing the official Swiss design registration Modèle Déposé.
The contrasting jet-black dial is elegantly designed with clean white lines and classic Roman numerals on the quarters, surrounded by a glossy chrome-plated metal bezel that completes the futuristic retro look. With a case diameter of 35 millimeters excluding the crown, the watch has a very wearable unisex size that was marketed as a men's size at the time and is highly sought after today. The watch is in an unusually good and fully original condition, with the acrylic showing the age-appropriate but charming light yellowing without any deep cracks. Unique is the fact that the original plastic band remains fully intact and functional after all these years, and since the mechanism works perfectly and keeps time accurately, this is a rare and immediately wearable collectible for enthusiasts of historic watch design.
