This original Abelam ceremonial yam mask from Papua New Guinea, made of natural fibre, dates to the mid-20th century and measures 40 × 31 × 6 cm; it is in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
A traditional ceremonial yam mask from the Abelam people of the East Sepik region, Papua New Guinea. These masks were used to decorate the largest and most impressive yams following the harvest. Among the Abelam, the cultivation of giant ceremonial yams is deeply connected with ancestral beliefs, spiritual power and social prestige. By adorning their finest yams with beautifully crafted masks and other decorations, the growers honoured their ancestors, sought their blessings and appealed for fertility, abundance and a successful harvest in the following season. Such masks reflect the remarkable relationship between agriculture, ancestral worship and ceremonial life in Abelam society. An interesting and culturally significant ethnographic piece, field collected in the 1990s.
