This Japanese ceramic jardinière, attributed tentatively to the Satsuma tradition, dates to the Meiji period and is decorated with colourful figurative scenes and gilt details; it measures 24 cm across and 14 cm high and comes with a separate black display base.
Description from the seller
Japanese garden planter of possible Satsuma style – Approximate dating: late 19th century–early 20th century – Multicolored ceramic with gilding – Japan, attributed
Large-format Japanese planter, made in glazed ceramic and decorated with figurative scenes, ornamental motifs and gilded details. By its decorative characteristics, the piece can be loosely associated with the Satsuma tradition.
Polychrome decoration and gilding.
The piece features a circular, globular shape, with a wide upper opening and smoothly rounded walls.
The exterior surface is decorated with numerous figures dressed in traditional Japanese attire, along with furniture, vessels and other elements depicted in scenes of a folkloric character.
Gold tones, reds, blacks, greens and ochers are observed on an ivory background. The upper part is traversed by an ornamental frieze with floral, geometric and stylized motifs.
The combination of figurative scenes, polychrome decoration, gilding and the fine crazing of the glaze presents similarities with Japanese productions related to the Satsuma tradition.
Nevertheless, the stylistic attribution and dating have not been confirmed through a legible mark, provenance documentation, or technical analysis.
The piece stands out visually for its dimensions, the density of its decoration and the variety of motifs depicted.
At the base there is a rectangular stamped or applied hallmark, possibly related to a Japanese workshop or manufacturer.
The inscription is not legible in its current state, so it is not possible to securely identify the manufacturer, workshop, or period of production.
Overall condition consistent with the attributed age and use.
The surface shows fine glaze crazing, visible in the photographs and not perceptible to the touch according to the inspection performed.
In the lower zone there are two small linear marks.
From its appearance, these could correspond to manufacturing irregularities; however, their origin cannot be determined with certainty by visual inspection alone.
The polychrome decoration and gilding show signs of wear and loss typical of use and the passage of time.
A separate black decorative base is included, with signs of use and wear.
The photographs are part of the description and show the condition, decoration, base, and visible marks.
