Description from the seller

Emmanuel Frémiet (1824–1910) – Saint Michael Slaying the Dragon – Important antique sculpture in patinated bronze, signed and numbered 535

Important sculpture in patinated bronze depicting Saint Michael the Archangel in the act of defeating the dragon, a famous subject conceived by the French sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet (Paris, 1824–1910).

The work bears the engraved signature “E. FREMIET” on the sculpture and the progressive number “535”, individually punched on the bronze surface.

The numbering, the dimensions, the weight and the technical features are compatible with the numbered ancient castings of the model, some of which have been traced to the workshop of the founder and publisher Charles More. Since no legible foundry mark has yet been identified, the attribution to Charles More is proposed exclusively as a hypothesis to be verified and not as a certainty.

Characteristics:

* Author of the model: Emmanuel Frémiet (1824–1910)
* Subject: Saint Michael slaying the dragon
* Material: patinated bronze
* Signature: “E. FREMIET”
* Punch-numbered: “535”
* Maximum height to the wingtip: about 60 cm
* Height to the top of the head: about 48 cm
* Wingspan (aperture/width): about 32.5 cm
* Base dimension given: about 11.5 cm
* Weight: about 6.8 kg
* Hollow casting, visible from the bottom
* Provenance: Italian private collection
* Proposed era: late 19th century, to be confirmed

Condition:

The sculpture shows an antique patina with oxides, superficial deposits and normal signs due to age. The sword is broken and the missing part is not available. Also missing is the decorative spur in the shape of a star located behind the boot. No additional marble base is present.

The sculpture has not been polished, repatinated or restored by the current owner. All absences, surfaces and the overall state are documented in detail in the photographs, which form an integral part of the description.

Please study carefully the images of the signature “E. FREMIET”, the numbering “535”, the back, the patina and the damaged parts.

Due to weight, dimensions, wing fragility and the condition of the sword, the work will be packed with particular care. In-person pickup or professional insured shipping is recommended.
