Description from the seller
This icon (in Amharic: አዶ or ādo) is an example of ecclesiastical handicraft from the 20th century. It is completely handmade. The icon has a book form and is made of paper, wood and pigments. Very beautifully detailed. The icon was acquired in situ and was owned by a student priest in the holy place Lalibela, Ethiopia.
Since the fourth century, Ethiopia has had a Christian tradition. Within this tradition Ethiopian art was born. Ethiopian churches are decorated with wall inscriptions and icons. In addition, sacred writings are decorated with miniatures. Illiterate believers gained access to the stories of the Bible through pictorial representations. The depiction of the story takes precedence in terms of importance. Therefore representations focus more on the expression of the story than on a realistic rendering. Later in the development of Ethiopian painting, details received more attention and representations sometimes became more realistic.
Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 2 cm
Carefully packed and shipped with track and trace.
