This Swedish traditional Scandinavian wooden bridal basket, dating from 1821, stands on a foot and features openwork carving and contrasting red-and-blue painted details.
Description from the seller
Traditional Scandinavian wooden bridal mand on a foot with an openwork pattern, featuring carved clover motifs and contrasting red-blue painting. "A.F.D.I. 1821" - mangelmand
Sweden, ca. 1821
The sides are openwork with decorative carved motifs in the shape of hearts and geometric patterns. It is finished with traditional polychrome painting (often in red, black and ochre/orange) and decorative borders.
Symbolism and Marriage: This type of basket was hardly an everyday object. They were bridal gifts or engagement presents, made by a craftsman or by the groom himself. The hearts in the openwork carving are therefore a direct symbol of love.
The inscription ("A.F.D.I. 1821"): The letters are the initials of the owner. In Scandinavian traditions female initials often end with 'D' (for Dotter, i.e., daughter, as in Jansdotter). The 'I' or '1' at the end can stand for the surname or a specific regional designation. The year 1821 places this object in the late Empire period, though folk art often follows its own timeless traditions.
In good used condition, with signs of wear and small stains.
Please look closely at the photos for a good impression.
