Description from the seller

Auction of an exceptionally historically and numismatically significant collection: the four official medals issued by the Secretariat of State of the Holy See for the international apostolic journeys of Pope Leo XIII, accompanied by their original Vatican cases.

These specimens fix in bronze the first stages of the international mission of a Pontiff whose election opened an unprecedented chapter in Church history.

The exclusivity of the proposal lies in its completeness: the opportunity to acquire the entire series, already gathered and preserved with its original accompanying set. A group capable of becoming the flagship of a contemporary Vatican medallic collection.

For the visit to the Principality of Monaco no official medal was issued: the lot therefore includes all emissions of the series up to the trip to France in September 2026.

THE FOUR ISSUES

1. TURKEY AND LEBANON — 27 NOVEMBER–2 DECEMBER 2025

The international debut of the Pontificate, linked to the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.

The reverse bears the inscription “TVRCIAM ET LIBANVM VISIT”, the date in Roman numerals and references to Saint Andrew the Apostle, Saint Charbel, the Madonna of Harissa, and the cedar of Lebanon.

Artist: Amalia Mistichelli.

2. AFRICA — 13–23 APRIL 2026

Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea are celebrated through the Latin names of the countries visited and a composition featuring Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, together with symbols of Christian presence on the continent.

A emission that recalls the Pontiff’s deep bond with Augustinian spirituality.

Artist: Amalia Mistichelli.

3. SPAIN — 6–12 JUNE 2026

A composition of sacred places and emblems of Spanish religious tradition accompanies the inscription “HISPANIAM VISIT” and the travel date.

Artist: D. Longo.

4. FRANCE — 25–28 SEPTEMBER 2026

The Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Madonna of Lourdes characterize the reverse, with the inscription “FRANCOGALLIAM VISIT” and the date of the visit.

Artist: A. Cicconi.
