Description from the seller

Henri Endlich (1886–1948) — Dutch landscape with windmill

Oil on canvas. Signed.

Attractive landscape by the Dutch painter Henri Endlich (1886–1948), a artistic name linked to Henri Welter, who also worked as an art dealer. The Getty ULAN registers him as a Dutch painter and dealer, born in 1886 and died in 1948, and also notes the name Henri Welter. Other sources in the Dutch market likewise identify Henri Endlich as a pseudonym of Henri Welter.

The work depicts a characteristic Dutch river landscape, with a rural building situated beside the water and a windmill receding in the distance. The presence of these elements places the composition within the Dutch landscape tradition that Endlich repeatedly cultivated.

The composition is built through a marked sequence of planes. In the foreground stretches the surface of the water, speckled with reeds and reflections; on the right bank is concentrated the farmhouse surrounded by trees and vegetation, while the small windmill on the left serves as a counterpoint and guides the gaze toward the horizon.

The wide blue sky stands out, occupied by large white and grayish clouds. The painter reserves a substantial portion of the composition for the sky, thus enhancing the sense of openness intrinsic to the Netherlands landscape.

The brushwork is loose and visible, especially in the vegetation, waters and reflections. The color range combines light blues and slightly pinkish whites with dark greens, earth tones and browns, introducing small color accents in the figures and elements near the house.

Stylistically, the work relates to the continuation during the early decades of the 20th century of the Dutch landscape tradition linked to the Hague School, particularly for its interest in canals, polders, rural buildings and atmospheric effects. The existing documentation on Endlich indeed shows a recurring production of Dutch landscapes, rural scenes and water views.

The painting bears the signature in the lower left corner.

About Henri Endlich

Henri Endlich (1886–1948) was a Dutch painter and dealer. The Getty Research Institute, based on data from the RKD, records Endlich, Henri as a Dutch painter and dealer, and notes Henri Welter as an associated name.

His known production is especially related to the Dutch landscape: canals, ships, farms, polders and rural settings. Numerous examples of this theme remain in market records, including landscapes with vessels, farms and water views.

There is, however, some complexity around works marketed under this signature: Dutch documentation indicates that Henri Welter used the maternal surname Endlich and that, in his activity as a dealer, some paintings by other artists may have been sold under this signature. Therefore, in the absence of specific provenance documentation, it is advisable to catalog the works by the signature and the traditional attribution to Henri Endlich.

Conservation status

The work presents a condition consistent with its age. Craquelure is visible in various areas of the pictorial surface, in addition to the usual signs of aging. The photographs are an integral part of the description and must be consulted carefully to assess the painting’s current state.

The work is presented in an elaborate historicist frame.

IMPORTANT ABOUT THE FRAME

The frame shown in the photographs is provided exclusively as a GIFT with the work. The frame is not part of the lot for valuation purposes, has no commercial value attributed, and is included only as courtesy for the buyer.

Consequently, any potential damage, breakage, loss of moulding or damage suffered by the frame during transport cannot be a reason for complaint or affect the valuation of the acquired work.

The work will be carefully packaged in a professional manner, using materials appropriate to provide maximum protection during transport.

IMPORTANT: shipments to islands, extra-peninsular territories or destinations requiring customs procedures may incur additional transport, handling and/or customs costs, which will be borne by the buyer.
