Height: 11-16 cm, Width: 9-12 cm, Depth: 4-7 cm
The light yam tuber is a staple food across almost all of Oceania. Especially in New Guinea, in the Maprik Hills, north of the Sepik River, the Abelam and Wosera peoples have developed a pronounced cult around these yam tubers: the aim is to harvest as large tubers as possible. The largest yam tubers are awarded in competitions. At religious thanksgiving festivals, the larger yams from the last harvest are then decorated with woven masks known as ‘Baba mini’. In addition, the tubers are adorned with jewelry and painted. In this ceremonial attire, the tubers, in the eyes of the Abelam and Wosera, are ritually and temporarily transformed into benevolent ancestors or spirits.
