With Through the Circle – Reemergence, Maurizio Castagna introduces in the series Through the Circle a dimension that is particularly intense and vital. While other works in the cycle explore passage, connection, or memory of origin, here the central theme becomes emergence: the return to light of what had remained hidden in the depths of consciousness, memory, and human experience.
At the center of the composition stands a large open circle, no longer perceived as a boundary but as a place of transformation. Inside it, forms seem to churn and regenerate in a vortex of matter, color, and sign. White, blue, and red brushstrokes intertwine in a continuous dynamic that suggests the birth of a new energy, as if something submerged were slowly surfacing toward the surface.
The strength of the work lies in the extraordinary chromatic tension. The incandescent reds dominate the canvas, evoking passion, life, and creative impulse; the blues introduce a dimension of openness and breath; white acts as generative light that traverses the material and reveals its deepest lamination. Black, used as a structural support, contains and at the same time frees movement, transforming the painting gesture into a true energetic trace.
As is often the case in Castagna’s research, the creative process arises from the encounter between control and spontaneity. The overpainting of pigments, acrylics, enamels, and resins builds a surface rich in memory, where each layer preserves the trace of the previous ones. Nothing is erased: everything reemerges, transformed and enriched by time.
Formed at the Accademia Albertina of Turin and present in important international collections, Castagna confirms in this work his ability to transform gesture-based abstraction into a language profoundly human. The circle becomes here a symbol of rebirth, of recovering the essential, of returning to an inner truth that is never definitively buried.
In Through the Circle – Reemergence, painting thus becomes a metaphor for life itself: what seems lost, forgotten, or submerged continues to exist and, sooner or later, always finds the strength to return to light.
