Stamperia Reale’s *Codice per lo Regno delle Due Sicilie – Leggi civili e Leggi penali* brings together two Italian legal works published in 1835 and 1836 in one volume bound in parchment.
Description from the seller
Code for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies – Civil Laws and Penal Laws – 1835–1836 – Two works in one volume – Ancient parchment binding
Interesting legislative collection of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, comprising two important normative texts from the Bourbon era, published in Naples in 1835 and 1836 and brought together in a single volume with a parchment binding.
Contents:
1. Code for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies – Part One: Civil Laws
Naples, Royal Printing Press, 1836.
Official tenth edition.
The text gathers the civil legislation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, with provisions relating to property, succession, gifts, servitudes and other principal private law institutions.
2. Penal Laws contained in the second part of the Code for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
Naples, Printing Press and Papermill of Fibreno, 1835.
Second edition greatly expanded and improved, with subsequent legislative updates after 1819.
The work includes penal legislation, with provisions on offenses, penalties and contraventions, accompanied by cross-references and notes to later norms.
Characteristics of the copy
Two works in a single volume, with distinctive title pages and editorial data. Ancient parchment binding in light color, with edges and corners coherent with the age of the item. Presence of provenance stamp and old handwritten annotations. Texts in Italian, with eighteenth-century typographic layout and royal crests on the title pages.
The civil laws section features a numbering that reaches page 447, where the inscription “End” appears. The overall thickness of the volume requires verification also of the preliminary pages, indexes and other sections.
Conditions
Copy in overall discrete/good condition for its age. The parchment shows widespread stains, surface dirt, handwritten marks, abrasions and wear to the corners and the ends of the spine. Internally there are slight foxing, some stains and normal time marks; the text remains generally clear and legible.
The completeness of all sheets has not been verified by bibliographic collations. Prospective buyers are invited to examine the photographs carefully, which form an integral part of the description.
Historical and collectible interest
A significant testimony to the legal culture of pre-unification Italy and to the Bourbon legal system, of particular interest to antique book collectors, scholars of the history of law and enthusiasts of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Naples, 1835–1836. Two nineteenth-century legal works bound together in a single parchment-bound volume from the period.
