Corneille’s original 1945 charcoal and pastel landscape, *Scène de campagne à Thorn dans le Limbourg*, is hand-signed and sold framed.
Description from the seller
Beautiful, very early charcoal drawing with pastel by Corneille titled 'Scène de campagne à Thorn dans le Limbourg' (Landscape in Thorn, Limburg) from 1945.
Bring a museum piece into your home with this unique work by one of the Netherlands' greatest artists.
Corneille lived in Amsterdam during the war years and afterwards, until about 1950, and attended the School of Applied Arts and the Rijksakademie (where he also met Karel Appel).
This drawing was dated by Corneille (likely retrospectively) as '1943', but research has shown this to be incorrect and that it should be 1945. In 1943 Corneille was confined in Amsterdam and could not travel due to the German occupation. Directly after the liberation, Corneille traveled with Karel Appel to Limburg to visit the village of Thorn near Roermond. They had heard of this beautiful village and wanted to paint the blossoming apple trees. There are still a number of known works by Corneille from Thorn depicting blossoming apple trees.
Corneille was deeply inspired by Theo van Gogh, and this piece has a likeness to the blossoming trees that Van Gogh drew and painted.
It is rare for such an early work by one of the Netherlands' best-known artists to become available for a private collection.
The provenance of this work is guaranteed by the Foundation Guillaume Corneille. It comes with a certificate signed by Mrs N. (Natacha) Van Beverloo (Natacha Suzanne Laktionoff), widow of Corneille.
The drawing measures 23.5 x 35 cm and has been newly framed by our framer in a very handsome anthracite-aluminium frame with a double mount and Art Glass, with overall dimensions of 43 x 53 cm.
