Emmanuel Dilhac is a multidisciplinary French contemporary artist born on April 17, 1939 in Paris, mainly known for his work as painter, sculptor, poet and musician. After studying for six years at the Estienne School of Graphic Arts and working as an engraver on jewelry, he left the capital in 1970 to settle in Normandy, initiating a fusion-like rapprochement with nature that would profoundly alter his creative approach. His pictorial work sits at the crossroads of outsider art, idiosyncratic art and land art, quickly abandoning figuration for total abstraction dictated by inner feeling. Through what he calls the “Rhythmic Painting,” he creates series on wood incorporating sediments and natural materials such as earth, ochres or sand in order to transcribe the raw energy and secret memories of the mineral, vegetal and animal kingdoms. Alongside his canvases, this tireless explorer is a seeker of sounds who designs monumental installations and a unique instrumentation based on lithophones or organic elements gathered in the woods. At more than 87 years old, the painter from Yquebeuf continues to create with undiminished fervor, regularly opening his Normandy studio to share his vibrational hymn to creation
