Morin-Jean, whose real name is Jean Alexis Joseph Morin (1877–1940), is a French archaeologist, painter, draftsman and engraver. Born in Paris, he studied national and Oriental archaeology at the École du Louvre. A man of letters as much as of images, he published several reference works on Greek drawing, Gaulish glassmaking, and wood engraving. Mobilized during World War I, he later resumed his artistic career and joined the Society of Original Wood Engravers. He was initiated into etching by Maxime Maufra and Eugène Delâtre, before turning to burin and wood engraving. His deliberately pared-down style is expressed through Breton or Ardennes landscapes and still lifes. In parallel, he served as deputy curator of the National Museum of the Château de Fontainebleau from 1933 to 1939. His versatile body of work reconciles scientific rigor with aesthetic finesse. He died in 1940, leaving behind a rich output of prints and illustrations.
