Mervyn Peake’s *Titus Groan* is a 1946 first edition in hardback, with a dust jacket marked “second impression”.
Description from the seller
A genuinely desirable modern first edition. In a second impression dust jacket (as is often stated). Bound in red cloth, on second world war era economy paper.
This was the opening novel of the Gormenghast sequence, a major work of 20th century gothic fantasy. The book introduces the vast, decaying castle of Gormenghast and its eccentric inhabitants, beginning the story of Titus, the 77th Earl of Groan.
It was followed by Gormenghast (1950) and Titus Alone (1959); together they form the Gormenghast trilogy, although Peake also wrote more material connected with the character of Titus after those novels.
Original cloth boards are in a clean condition, with just some sun fading in places. Neat previous owner's details to FFEP. The dust jacket is not price clipped (shows 18 shillings), and is marked 'second impression'. The jacket is slightly marked in places, being a pale colour, and the spine is a little darkened. The edges have a few tiny chips.
Overall, in a very good condition. Now held in removable protective archival sleeve.
438 pages. 22 x 14 cm
