Year of publication: 1824, on the title page MDCCCXXIV.

The offering is exclusively the fifth Asia volume described here; not a complete copy of the multi-volume work.
Content and Illustrations
The volume treats Phoenicia, Syria, Judea and Hebrew culture as well as Arabia. Other sections are devoted to ancient peoples of Asia Minor, including Phrygians, Trojans, Mysians, Lydians, Lycians, Cilicians and Bithynians.
The plates show, among other things:
– Phoenician deities, coins and tomb monuments.
– Ancient buildings from Laodicea, Baalbek and Palmyra, including views, floor plans and architectural details.
– Biblical scenes, historical costumes, military insignia and religious vessels.
– A synagogue, the Temple in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
– Historical musical instruments and Jewish costumes.
– Arab emirs, caliphs, religious dignitaries and prayer postures.
– Public baths, a decorated pilgrimage camel and military exercises in Yemen.
– The sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina.
– Ancient and mythological scenes around Troy, including Hector, Amazons and the family of Priam.
– Hercules and Omphale as well as representations of Lycian coins.
Particularly appealing is the combination of colored architectural views, detailed costume plates and depictions of religious practices and objects.
Plates and Completeness
According to my own review and counting based on the included plate index, all plates listed there I–XL are present. My count yields 40 plates, mostly hand-colored, with some uncolored illustrations in addition.
The notes on plate count and completeness are based on a careful private examination; no independent guarantee of completeness is offered.
Condition
An attractive antiquarian copy with frequently well-preserved coloring and detailed plate illustrations.
Age-related browning of the paper and variably pronounced foxing, especially on the title page and the index pages, partly also on the plates and their margins. Occasional printing bleed-through or translucent text, as well as light creases, waves and signs of use. The plates appear overall well preserved; existing signs of aging are visible in the photos.
The photographs show the offered copy and supplement the condition description. Please take the images into account when assessing.
