ERA: first half of the 19th century, about 1815–1840.
The oval body on a square foot, the swan handles and the full gilding are characteristics of the late Empire style and the Restoration, when Parisian manufactories produced vases of this type in series for the luxury market.

Condition report:
- good, with normal wear for an object of nearly two centuries.
The gilding is still bright, the colors are vivid and there are no obvious gaps.

Fine porcelain of high craftsmanship, glazed white inside the neck and hand-painted on the central belly.

Gold leaf gilding (or darkening by thickness) covering the entire neck, foot, square base, and the magnificent side swan handles.

High-fired polychrome enamels used for the central figurative scene (red, yellow, green, purple and black for the background).

It is said the vase was part of a symmetrical pair (a pendant) given on the occasion of a prestigious marriage between two historic Italian houses. It remained for generations in a reception room of a villa on Lake Como, used to embellish gatherings dedicated to ambassadors and artists of the era.

About the scene and the vase's history

The visual composition: The scene is set against a deep black background that makes the vivid colors of the figures stand out. In the center, a nobleman dressed in Renaissance/Evelyn-inspired attire (a red puffed jacket with gold details, a stiff ruff collar, and purple hosiery) sits comfortably on a green cushion resting on a wooden structure. Beside him, kneeling, with a mustard yellow dress and a white veil around her head, a lady gazes at him with a devout and intense expression. All of this is framed by a scarlet red drape hanging on the right.

The sculptural details: The handles are the true decorative masterpiece of the object, shaped as two golden swans with finely chased wings, whose curved necks connect to the vase’s neck, giving it a majestic and regal air.

The narrative: The scene depicts an episode from a chivalric or tragic tale of the Sixteenth Century: the secret farewell between the young Count Federico da Caravaggio and the lady Isabella, just before he departs for the battlefields of Flanders. The swan, symbol of eternal fidelity and pure love, watches over the sides of the vase almost to seal a pledge of love that will endure distance and time.
