Magdalena penitente is an unsigned 17th-century oil painting from Spain, attributed to the Spanish or Viceregal School, and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
• Saint: In the center of the composition is the figure of a woman with long, loose, wavy hair, traditionally identifying Mary Magdalene. She is kneeling or seated in an attitude of deep devotion, contemplation and repentance.
• The Skull: In her lap she holds a skull (or human cranium), the classic element of memento mori (reminder of mortality and the vanity of earthly pleasures), on which one of her hands rests delicately.
• The Cross and the Angels: At her right side, two small corporeal angels or cherubs (putti) hold a large wooden cross bearing the crown of thorns, symbolizing the Passion of Christ and redemption.
• Celestial Presence: In the upper left corner, emerging among the clouds, the faces of several celestial cherubs are observed observing the devotional scene.
Composition, Color and Style
• Atmosphere: The scene unfolds in a natural setting or mystical cave (typical of the hermitic retreat of the saint). In the background, to the left, a landscape with a twilight sky in soft tones of blue, orange and pink is glimpsed.
• Color Palette: Earth tones, ochres, browns and golds predominate in the saint's clothing and surroundings, contrasted with the dark mantle draped over her shoulders and the subtle reddish details in the angels' fabrics.
• Painterly Style: The volumetric rendering of the figures, the treatment of the drapery folds, and the dramatic use of light and shadow reflect a clear influence of Hispano-American colonial art or European devotional painting of the Baroque period. The proportions and features have a tender and stylized character, common in private devotional art.
