Description from the seller
Large and rare spherical vase/cachepot in heavy earthenware, produced by the prestigious Italian manufactory Società Ceramica Richard in Milan in the last decades of the 19th century (period preceding the union with Manifattura Ginori in 1896), as indicated by the “Biscione Visconteo” on the base + CR (Ceramica Richard).
The title of the pattern YEDDO in pseudo-oriental characters and the inscription in Japanese characters (日本美術, Nihon Bijutsu - Japanese Art)
Model / Decoration: Service/pattern "YEDDO". Splendid transferware decoration (transfer print) in blue-anthracite underglaze with a typically Japonist and eclectic taste, widespread after the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878. The body is decorated with a variety of motifs of Eastern and Western fauna and flora: pheasants, swans on the pond, turkeys, Japanese lanterns, fans and bamboo plants. The upper border features a refined blue spray shading ("sponged / blown blue").
Conditions: Generally good conservative condition for an object of over 130 years. The ceramic shows a natural and fascinating period craquelure of the glaze (craquelure) and light signs of wear or small superficial blemishes that attest to its authenticity. No restorations performed.
