A lot of two Japanese bowls, described as featuring a phoenix and urushi lacquer on wood, dating from circa 1970–1980 and in good used condition.
Description from the seller
1. The red lacquer shell (Kashibachi)
• Typical weight: Very light, usually between 200 and 350 grams (excluding the wooden box).
• Region of origin: Very likely Yamanaka-Onsen (Ishikawa Prefecture). Known for precise wood turning and the decoration with gold dust (Maki-e). The associated wooden box (Tomobako) serves as the workshop's authenticity certificate.
• Materials: High-quality natural wood (often Zelkova or horse chestnut), coated with genuine urushi lacquer (tree resin). The leaves consist of sprinkled gold and silver powder (Maki-e / Rankan with mother-of-pearl nuances).
2. The small porcelain bowl (Kobachi)
• Typical size: About 10 cm wide/long and around 3 cm high.
• Typical weight: Compact and heavier than wood, about 150 to 250 grams.
• Region of origin: Arita / Imari (Saga Prefecture) or alternatively Kanazawa (Kutani ware, Ishikawa Prefecture). The lush, colorful style with gold painting strongly indicates a regal porcelain of the Kinran-te tradition.
• Materials: White porcelain (kaolin clay), decorated with overglaze colors (pigments for blossoms and the phoenix) as well as gold leaf / real gold painting.
