Description from the seller
Wybrand Hendriks (1744–1831). Portrait of a young artist. Oil on canvas mounted on canvas (doubled). Size including frame 74x51 cm. Without frame 60x47 centimeters.
A distinctive and characterful oil portrait, depicting a young man with a dark head covering, an elegant white cravat, and dark clothing, possibly depicted as an artist.
Lower left in red signed W. Hendriks.
The young artist is subtly lit, creating a lovely contrast with the dark background and the deeply colored clothing. The soft transitions in the skin tones, the natural facial expression, and the attention to individual character traits confer a particular intimacy to the portrait. The composition, in subject matter, aligns with the tradition of Dutch artist portraits around 1800.
