Étienne Joseph Mein (1865-1938) was a renowned painter, draftsman and printmaker, born in Allauch and deeply rooted in the Marseille art scene. After starting as an apprentice metal engraver, he perfected his training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille where he won a highly selective first prize. A curious traveler, he traversed Haute-Savoie, Isère and Haute-Loire, but it is his sunlit native Provence that remained his absolute source of inspiration. His vibrant landscapes, still lifes and intimate genre scenes brilliantly capture the light of the Midi through oil painting. In 1893, he achieved Parisian consecration by exhibiting his painting Le Grand-Père at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français. Becoming an influential member of the Société des Artistes Marseillais and the French Aquafortists, he earned a solid reputation for his fine etchings. Alongside his creative work, from 1921 he dedicated himself to teaching drawing and modeling in the regional professional schools. In 1931, he crowned his teaching career by being named full professor by competitive examination at the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Distinguished as Officer of the Académie and then Officer of Public Instruction, he passed away in 1933, remaining faithful to his students until the end.
