Description from the seller
Important Antique Silver Plated Desk Inkpot – Empire Era – Richly Ciselured with Allegorical Figure of Justice
Important desk inkpot in solid silver, from the Empire period, dating to the early 19th century, characterized by a monumental structure and rich ornamental work, adorned by an allegorical figure of Justice placed at the center of the composition.
The structure features a wide rectangular base, finely worked with relief decorations, botanical motifs, volutes and perimeter borders on engraved. The upper plane is organized symmetrically with several compartments intended for writing accessories, giving the whole an elegant and functional appearance.
Particularly scenographic is the central figure representing Justice, depicted standing with classical robes richly draped. The figure holds in the left hand a two-plate balance, symbol of fairness and impartiality, while in the right hand she wields a sword, traditional attribute of judicial authority. The face presents delicate features and a gathered hairstyle, while the drapery of the garments is shaped with particular attention to detail.
The sculpture rests on an elaborate pedestal decorated with ornamental motifs and reliefs, rising from the central part of the inkpot, imparting verticality and grandeur to the composition.
On the sides are placed two finely worked circular recipients, with bodies decorated with foliate motifs and pierced lids topped with small pointed terminals. The structure also includes several accessory elements, including containers, shaped lids and small recipients, all characterized by coordinated workmanship.
Of particular merit are the two rectangular elements decorated with figures of raptors with wings spread, inserted into a composition of volutes and foliated motifs engraved. These details recall the Neoclassical ornamental repertoire and contribute to the decorative richness of the ensemble.
The front part presents a wide central smooth band, flanked by elaborate relief decorations, while in the lower area there is a long basin for supporting writing instruments.
The base is supported by four important zoomorphic feet, modeled with raptor heads, feathered wings and feral paws, sculptural elements of strong character that give the inkpot a particularly solemn presence.
The silvery surface bears a patina with darker shading in the recesses of the decorations, highlighting the depth of the engravings and the complexity of the workmanship. A stamp impressed on the metal is also visible, whose exact identification requires further verification.
An object of great charm and prestige, particularly valued for the richness of details, the importance of the composition and the elegance of the allegorical iconography. A refined desk accessory, ideal for collections of antique silver, professional studies, libraries or representational environments.
