This multicoloured, oval porcelain casket with a lid, mythological relief scenes and ram-head handles was made by Ginori in Italy around 1850–1900 and measures 21 × 12 × 14 cm, with small signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
Polychrome porcelain box is a valuable nineteenth-century craftwork linked to the famous Ginori di Doccia manufactory. This kind of object, mainly produced in the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860-1890), revisits the relief decorative typology historically defined as “alla Capodimonte.” The reliefs were originally introduced and developed by the Carlo Ginori factory in Doccia already in 1737, later becoming a distinguishing feature that was successfully reintroduced throughout the entire century.
The oval-shaped container with a lid, the central body is embellished with reserves enclosed by foliate volutes and gilding, within which mythological scenes are rendered in bas-relief, finely hand-painted in polychromy. The lid is decorated with small putti or cherubs in relief alternated with garlands, while the upper part presents a plastic Triumph of classical figures. The two side handles of the coffer are molded in the shape of a goat’s head (or ram).
Under the base the cobalt blue mark beneath a glaze remains. Although partially covered by residues and dirt or old glue, on the upper part one can recognize the characteristic five-point crown beneath which the letter "N" is discernible. This is the historic “alla Capodimonte” mark. From 1868, Marquis Lorenzo Ginori chose to officially apply it to Doccia to designate pieces of excellence realized with figurative reliefs and mythological motifs, drawing on the famous Neapolitan Bourbon factory’s molds acquired decades earlier.
Good condition with normal signs of time and use.
