Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707–1788) was one of the most influential figures of the Enlightenment and the naturalist who, before Darwin, laid the foundations for modern biology and geology.
His monumental work, Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, consisting of 36 volumes published between 1749 and 1789, was the first attempt to gather all knowledge of the natural world into a single systematic work. It was an immense editorial success, read not only by scientists but by the entire European aristocracy.
Guillaume-Philidor Van den Burggraaff (born in Brussels in 1790) was an important engraver, designer, and Belgian master lithographer. He played a fundamental role in the diffusion of art printing and scientific publishing in the Southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium) during the first half of the nineteenth century.
