Description from the seller
Splendid and imposing model of a galleon/Portuguese caravel in Christopher Columbus style (Santa Maria), entirely handmade in solid wood. A unique folk art piece dating from the 1940s/50s, not a modern industrial kit but the work of a craftsman of the time. Construction details visible in the photo:
• Hull: carved solid wood, composed of two overlapping boards. Side decoration with windows and star motifs carved by hand with a pyrography tool and a craft knife. Staining with the original dark finish. Small woodworm holes and signs of aging that attest to its age and authenticity (see detail photo of the side).
• Sails: made of original raw hemp/jute canvas, treated with wax and hand-patinated for an antique and swollen effect. Red Cross of the Order of Christ painted on the main sails (typical of Portuguese caravels from the 1500s). Weave detail visible in the photo.
• Deck: richly equipped with bollards, barrels, coils of rope, and wooden ladders, all carved and hand-placed. Rigging and blocks made with natural twine knotted by hand.
• Base: original wooden easel/stand.
